Concealed Carry on Campus

YCT at Texas Tech held an informational session about the concealed carry of handguns Tuesday, October 5th, from 10 am to 2 pm in Texas Tech’s Free Speech zone.

Statewide, YCT has made passing Concealed Carry on Campus legislation its first priority. To further this objective, YCT’s Texas Tech chapter informed students about the current legislation barring concealed handguns from Texas universities, educated them about the legislation YCT desires to pass legalizing concealed carry on campus, and debunked many of the myths regarding the usage of handguns.

Texas legislation currently legalizes concealed carry of handguns with a proper license on public grounds, including university grounds, but criminalizes carrying them in university buildings. This policy essentially prohibits the student possession of guns on campus as they go from building to building for classes.

Political Landscape in Lubbock, TX

Lubbock County has a reputation for being one of the most conservative places to live. With this said, one could conclude that Texas Tech University is the perfect place for conservatives to attend for a higher education. Our research shows the opposite is true.

After querying OpenSecrets.org, a website that shows political contributes, a different picture is painted for the political landscape in Lubbock, TX.

Our research yields that 26 Texas Tech employees donated a total of $18,550 to Barack Obama’s campaign. While only 10 employees gave a total of $6,800 to John McCain in the 2008 Presidential Election.

Overall, 98 Texas Tech employees gave a grand total of $48,484 to 2008 presidential candidates. Further analysis indicated that $33,000 of the total dollars donated went to Democratic candidates, and $15,484 went to Republican candidates.

This means around 68% of all donations went to Democratic candidates versus 32% to Republican candidates.

Young Conservatives of Texas at Texas Tech Expose "Tornado" of Disgrace

The Young Conservatives of Texas at Texas Tech are mounting a campaign to educate fellow classmates and take on the University administration over a prominent sculpture displayed proudly on campus known as the "Tornado of Ideas."

The sculpture was produced in 2004 by Tom Otterness, an artist that is well known for controversy.  The sculpture is made up of a tornado of many books that is tearing apart what appears to be the White House.  After carefully reviewing all of the books, the Young Conservatives have calculated that there is a strong liberal bias in the statue that was purchased directly with university funds at the cost of $142,000 when the Student Union Building was renovated in 2004.  The university claims the tornado is representative of conflicting ideals that make up America.
